Starting in September 2005, Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival (ACT) is an annual international theatrical carnival hosted by Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. It’s a main channel through which SDAC introduces international contemporary theatre productions to the local audience, as well as a frontline for foreign art festivals to learn about contemporary theatre productions in Asia. The festival has a different theme every year. Besides showing plays, the festival arranges workshops, post-show talks, and international forums, dramalogue and other public events, creating more opportunities for face-to-face communication between artists and audience. Focussing on contemporary works is the most importnant characteristic of the festival. During the festival, the latest and contemporary theatre productions are presented. To some extent, these productions reflect the theatre creation situation in a different kind of country or region. The festival is aimed at promoting original pieces and new elaboration of classics with contemporary spirits.
